Betsy Burts | Artist

Making art is a dance with one’s self.

Each work begins as a blank slate. Then through an intricate series of intuitive movements and coordinated gestures, it becomes a whole new creation—a singular expression of the artist’s soul.

Inspired by a love of exploring the natural world, I make art that reflects my feelings of curiosity and wonder. I seek illumination and want to allow space within my work for the viewer to make a connection.

Abstraction is my current passion. It’s born of a desire to evoke moments of reflection and recognition, without relying entirely on representation. Recent paintings are infused with the energy and mystery of the sea. They feature multiple layers of paint, markmaking and collaged elements used to create atmosphere and the illusion of depth. My hand built ceramics and sculptures follow a similar approach, with dynamic forms that come alive through visually rich surfaces and textures.

I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in visual art from Auburn University and built a long career as a successful graphic designer, illustrator and business owner. During those years, I continued my studies in painting and ceramics.

Now a full time visual artist, my art practice evolves through learning, experimentation and exploration. This passion has connected me to gifted artists and teachers from around the globe. I feel energized by discovery and the pursuit of new possibilities for expressing myself through my art.

Based in Atlanta, Georgia, I work primarily from my home studio. It’s a special place surrounded by peaceful woods filled with bird song.

When I’m not working, you’ll find me gathering inspiration by hiking a mountain or through a forest, walking next to water and traveling to places where I can marvel at the majesty of the ocean and sky.
